From February 1, 2025, Georgia will join the Common Transit Convention and the Convention on the Simplification of Formalities in Trade in Goods.
Georgia will accede to the Common Transit Convention and the Convention on the simplification of formalities in trade in goods, as provided for in Annex 13 to the Association Agreement between Georgia and the European Union, from 1 February 2025 and will become part of the New Computerized Transit System. As a result of the bilateral work and efforts made with the support of the European Union, the Georgian Customs Administration will exchange data in real time through the European New Computerized Transit System – NCTS.
This step follows Georgia’s consent to accede to the Conventions submitted on 19 December 2024. By joining the Conventions, it will be possible to transport goods between the EU and various countries that are members of the Common Transit Convention (Great Britain, Turkey, Iceland, Norway, Serbia, Ukraine, Switzerland, North Macedonia, a total of 36 countries) using a single transit declaration and a single guarantee electronically submitted to the Georgian Customs Administration, which will further increase the country’s transit capabilities and facilitate the safe, smooth and rapid movement of goods/cargo. In addition, Georgia will become an important part of the system that facilitates the movement of goods between the EU and other participating countries.
We would also like to note that the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance has been visited several times by a representative delegation of the TAXUD Directorate of the European Union in order to assess the progress of the project. During the working meetings, the responsible persons of the agency informed the members of the delegation about the measures taken in the service for the implementation of the project and answered their questions.
It is worth noting that simplified border crossing rules, such as mutually recognized financial guarantees and reduced controls, will significantly reduce the time/financial resources for business entities from the EU, Georgia, and other participating countries.
