Visit of Chairperson of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan to Georgia: Strengthening Inter-Parliamentary Dialogue and Prospects for Cooperation
On 23 February 2026, a two-day official visit of the Chairperson of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan to Georgia began. On the same day, a meeting was held at the Parliament of Georgia between representatives of the legislative bodies of Turkmenistan and Georgia, led by the Chairperson of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan D. Gulmanova and the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia Sh. Papuashvili. During the meeting, the parties noted that Turkmen-Georgian cooperation is developing on a regular and systematic basis and encompasses a wide range of areas of mutual interest. Within the framework of this cooperation, inter-parliamentary engagement assumes particular importance, serving as a vital instrument for strengthening mutual understanding and coordinating positions on key issues of the bilateral agenda.Emphasizing the dynamic nature of the established inter-parliamentary relations, the immense role of high-level parliamentary visits, as well as the annual meetings of inter-parliamentary friendship groups, was highlighted. These forms of interaction play a key role in parliamentary diplomacy, which acts as a pivotal mechanism for enhancing interstate relations and fostering the development of both bilateral and multilateral ties.The parties discussed legislative initiatives and the prospects for joint projects, with particular emphasis on improving the work of the inter-parliamentary friendship groups, promoting the exchange of experience, strengthening interaction between respective committees, and creating conditions conducive to regular and constructive dialogue. Particular attention was devoted to fostering contacts between the Group of Young Parliamentarians of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan and young parliamentarians of the Parliament of Georgia, as well as women parliamentarians. The sides also expressed their readiness to continue the practice of mutual support for initiatives within the framework of international organizations.At the conclusion of the negotiations, a Cooperation Agreement was signed between the Mejlis of Turkmenistan and the Parliament of Georgia.The parties expressed their confidence that this document would serve as a solid foundation for the further development of interparliamentary cooperation and the strengthening of bilateral relations.
